So many would-be Mermaids and Mermen write to me for information on our lives, that I feel I will be sharing much about our lives with all of you as the months roll by.
First, we are fish.
Yes, The Mers are proud to be cold-blooded, shimmering, quick, lively members of the huge order of fish.
We groan on hearing that some attempt to pin the name of mammal to us. We are definitely not warm-blooded, slow, furry, child-bearing mammals!
We’d have to be enormous, like Manatees, and just as slow, to be mammals.
Fish are, after all, the most gloriously gorgeous of all the species on our planet, don’t you think?
Silvery, most of us, glimmering, scaled, exquisitely shaped, and fast as underwater lightning!
We, like all fish, lay eggs, and don't go through any sort of awkward period of malformation that mars the early months or years of the offspring of mammals.
We’re always gorgeous!
I can’t imagine having warm blood - always having to stay in warm latitudes, worrying about temperatures all the time, and so on. Even wearing clothing!
Of course, speaking of Manatees, we all adore them, and spend lots of time playing with them when they venture out to salt watery seas - and - this is key! - if the Manatees choose to be among us Mers. We always communicate with them and with every other member of other species, and honor their own choices. Similarly, humans should, of course, always let any other member of other species decide for him or herself if encounters might be possible.
We think Manatees are great! They’re beautiful as they are - large and ponderous, extremely intelligent, and soulful.
We Mers just tend to be quite different.
We’re quick, agile, and thoroughly enjoy traveling all about the globe, never having to be confined in one area or another.
The only thing we must pursue is the plant growth. After all, we’re vegan - and this we share with the Manatees and with the Great Sea Turtles - and we love certain types of seaweed and sea grasses more than others. They have growing seasons and areas where they’re more delectable than others, and so we tend to congregate there, much as you humans crowd into restaurants!
And - naturally, we Mers have a special fondness for humans who are compassionate enough to be vegan, and it is only they we approach. Would you like ot learn more about becoming Vegan?
